There are many qualities of Beowulf that makes it one of the most prosperous poems. Beowulf is essentially like every other epic hero, brave and daring and quests to conquer all evil. The poem includes a good( Beowulf) and a bad ( Grendel ), but the two balance each other out nicely. The author of this criticism is a well known author by the name of J.R.R Tolkien, who wrote the Lord of the Rings series as well as The Hobbit. This source has been analyzed by Gale and is found to be accurate and credible. Tolkien supports my claim of "good v evil" in Beowulf by analyzing Beowulf and comparing him to Grendel. http://mds.marshall.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1297&context=etd Phipps, Charles. “A Feminist Critique of Beowulf: Women as Peace- Weavers And Goarders in Beowulf’s Courts.” Marshall University Marshall Digital Scholar. Marshall University, 1 January 2012. Web. 25 September 2015. Women in Beowulf contribute to the plot by keeping the peace, but also provoking violence. Wealhtheow and many women in Beowulf are married as part of a peace agreement between tribes. They are supportive of their husbands and keep their people at ease. But at the same time, women have a huge influence over the kingdom. Wealhtheow’s speech after Beowulf’s victory over Grendel is a way to ensure her sons’ position in the future, which is threatened by Beowulf. Charles Phipps is a respected student at Marshall University who has had his work approved by several professors. This source is credible because it comes from an .edu website, directly linked to a university. This article seems well researched and includes many other reviews within the article. http://web.csulb.edu/~jsmith10/aglcwif.PDF Smith, Jennifer. “Ides, Agæcwif: That’s No Monster, That’s My Wife! Uncovering the Origins of Grendel’s Mother.” CSULB. California State University Long Beach, 14 May 1999. Web. 25 September 2015. Grendel’s mother has been neglected in Beowulf. She does not receive a name and is described as evil because she is a descendent of Cain. Famous authors such as Tolkien reviewed Grendel’s mother, but only to relate her to Grendel. Nobody has gone into depth of Grendel’s mother. Jennifer is a student at California State University: Long Beach. Although she is a student, her work would have to be approved to be used on an .edu website. She has done a lot of research in relation to her work, citing several credible sources and mentioning other critiques in her work. |
